Abstract

This article examines the evolution and impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles on corporate accountability and sustainability frameworks. First, it explores the origin of ESG investing and regulations, tracing its development from early socially responsible investment initiatives to the establishment of global frameworks like the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). Next, the paper analyzes the evolution of ESG mandates in 2025, focusing on key regulatory advancements such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), California’s climate disclosure laws, and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards, which have transformed ESG from voluntary guidelines into mandatory compliance requirements. Next, the paper examines corporate challenges in ESG implementation, highlighting issues such as Scope 3 emissions reporting complexities, data collection barriers, and the resource-intensive nature of compliance. Subsequently, it addresses greenwashing schemes, examining how misleading sustainability claims undermine ESG credibility, with case studies on Volkswagen’s "Dieselgate" scandal and ExxonMobil’s climate deception lawsuits. Finally, the paper concludes with a positive outlook, exploring how technological innovations like AI and blockchain, combined with harmonized global standards, can enhance ESG transparency and foster meaningful corporate contributions to sustainability.
